SUMMARY

Resilience is one of qualities that people develop as they navigate the challenges that come from living with MS. Jen DeTracey shares a personal story and how it relates to her journey on managing life with MS.

🏆 Resilience and MS - You Are Resilient❕

When you think about resilience, how does it show up in your life?

I’d like to share a story about my cousin Damon. He died of kidney failure in his early 40s. I witnessed his life get harder and harder to the point where he couldn’t leave his home for days. He couldn’t eat. He was throwing up almost daily. We're talking like heavy duty suffering here.

Damon and I would often chat on Facetime. He gave me an old iPad so we could connect on video.

I love my cousin. As a little kid he was my favorite. He was so full of life and cute as a button. It broke my heart to witness how hard is life was from such an early age. His father committed suicide when Damon was four.

In his late teens, he got into the street drug scene. He ended up in jail.

Even with all this adversity, Damon eventually cleaned up his life. He was able to get a steady job at a warehouse manufacturing boxes. Although he was super smart and could have done anything he wanted as a career, he just wanted to keep on the straight and narrow and have a stable life.

He met a woman and they fell in love and bought a house together. They kept up paying the mortgage and had a good life. Then is health started to go downhill and his relationship fell apart.

Damon was diagnosed with kidney failure just when life was at it’s sweetest. They sold their house and he moved into a small apartment. He became very isolated.

Does experiencing huge struggles sound familiar?

I certainly when through hard times early in my diagnosis.

When I talked with Damon on Facetime, I used to say, “I'm just so amazed at how resilient you are.” He’d respond, “Yes I am. I am so resilient.”

Good for him for owning it.

When we're going through heavy duty crap in our lives, I think we need to own what our strengths are. I have become an extremely resilient and resourceful human being based on my circumstances, especially while living with fatigue and dealing with MS on a day to day basis.

I'm proud of the resilience I’ve developed.

I invite you to ponder for a moment about what has made you the resilient person that you are?

How has living with MS made me resilient?

Well, I've realized that my capacity is greater than I thought it was. For example, I’ve recorded a series of videos including this one. I might be exhausted for the next couple days, but it's the drive in me. It's the motivation and determination to live my life with purpose.

It's my passion for life and my desire to serve others. That’s what creates resilience for me.

Now I'm curious, what are the qualities that make it possible for you to be resilient?

What is your why?

We are strong individuals. So let's celebrate. Let's celebrate the resilience that keeps us moving forward in our life.
